CTMH May Stamp of the Month Blog Hop

April showers bring May stamps of the month! Close To My Heart is introducing the versatile stamp set, Cherish the Moments, this month. Come check out all the darling ideas with this set of 8 stamps with our monthly stamp of the month blog hop. (You're hopping right along if you're visiting from from Lori's blog. Head to Jody's next!)

For my top-fold standard-size card, I used the Wishes "File Pocket" pattern. I had to use my new Cherry-O Creative Basics paper pack (plus some card stock from my stash). I first stamped the Happy Birthday stamp in Chocolate ink on a piece of Colonial White card stock. I highlighted the "Happy Birthday" sentiment with a little light blue chalk and the "Cheers" with some Sweet Leaf chalk. Do you like how I used a Tulip Just Bloom as my file folder tab? I used a Tulip mini brad for the sentiment also.

I tucked the "Happy" tag into my pocket after decorating the front with B&T from the Creative Basics pack. It even includes this gorgeous Cranberry velvet ribbon! (The Tulip brads and Colonial White twill are also from my stash.) I think layering my ribbon also qualifies me for this week's Heart 2 Heart challenge (to use at least 2 different ribbons).

Thanks for looking at my card. I hope you like it! Now, remember to hop on over to Jody's blog and leave her a little lovin'!

All supplies from Close To My Heart: D1421 Cherish the Moment; X5810 Cherry-O Creative Basics; 1388 Colonial White cardstock; X5753 Tulip cardstock; 1292 Crystal Blue cardstock; Z2111 Chocolate ink; Z903 Summer chalks; Z1213 Spring Blossom brads; Z1266 Just Blooms Spring Blossom paper flowers; Z1099 Twill; 9033 Wishes ("File Pocket")

CTMH Summer Idea Book *SNEAK PEEK* New Product Blog Hop

With all the excitement about Studio J yesterday, you may not have even realized that a new Close To My Heart Idea Book goes live this Saturday! How about a sneak peek at some of the new products available? Then enjoy my post and join me on a blog hop! (If you're already hopping then you should have come from the lovely Antoinette's blog. If you want to keep on hopping, then head to Tanya's blog next. I'll include a link at the bottom because I'd love for you to read my post.)

Both my cards were easy to make because they use the same card pattern ("Sunrise" from the Wishes how-to book) and the same NEW stamp set, You're Great! (It is an adorable set of animal images and cute sayings; click on one of my photos below to see what all's included.)

This monkey card (in honor of my little monkey of a daughter) uses the NEW Passages paper pack. I started with a Brown Bag card stock base and used some of the designer B&T from the kit for the band at the bottom. I thought that the saying "I'm bananas over you" needed some yellow, so I chose to add Sunflower to this paper pack. Stamping the monkey on the half circle with Brown StazOn ink makes it so easy to watercolor the image without the ink running. I used a combination of waterbrush and inks (Bamboo, Brown Bag, Barn Red, Buttercup, and Sunflower) plus my Brown Bag marker to color this funny guy. After embellishing the card with some NEW Cocoa ribbon, I decided it needed a little something else, so I faux stitched on the focal image with my Sunflower marker.

My second card also uses the You're Great stamp set, but this time I couldn't resist using the alligator stamp. I paired it with the NEW Cherry-O Creative Basics paper pack. It is such a steal at only $7.95! I used the back side of the polka dot B&T for my card front because Sweet Leaf is a great choice for this guy! What do you think of the "bite" taken out of the top corner of the card? In keeping with this rough & tough guy, I scissor distressed the plaid pieces and the bottom edge of the card front.

To color this image, I first stamped him in Olive then quickly sprinkled clear embossing powder on it. (I have found that our embossing powder will stick well to our regular inks if you work quickly. You don't have to work at warp speed; just have everything ready before you start.) Then I heat set the image so that my watercoloring wouldn't run. I used Sweet Leaf ink and shaded with a touch of Olive. My final touches include a pewter photo hanger and Sweet Leaf ribbon. (I was afraid the Cranberry velvet ribbon included in the Creative Basics pack was a bit too sweet for this guy.) Finally, I stamped "Later gator!" in Olive.

Thanks for hopping by! Be sure to head to Tanya's blog now for more NEW sneak peeks. Later gator!

Studio J Is Here!!! Check Out My Cruise Layout!

IT'S HERE!!!!!!!!!! Announcing the arrival of Studio J, taking scrapbooking to the next level! You can check it out starting at 11:00 AM EDT by clicking right HERE.

Be sure to go check it out and play, play, play! Whether you want to use it as a free design studio to see how your layouts will look before cutting (or purchasing) that particularly amazing paper you've been eyeing or you'd like to do what I did and create layouts, Studio J offers something for every scrapbooker.

Our tagline is: Real life. Real scrapbooks. Real time.
If I can do it and LOVE it, you can too!!
You are going to want to read this whole post carefully. It will be worth every juicy little tidbit! Here's a little FAQ for YOU!
Q: When is the release date?
A: TODAY, TUESDAY, APRIL 27, 2010. 9 AM CDT/11 AM EDT. Just go to my website and there will be a tab added that day for Studio J. Click there and you can begin playing...for FREE! You pay NOTHING unless you order some layouts. Putting them together is TOTALLY FREE! I love free! In the meantime, if you haven't watched the Studio J introductory video yet, click here to do it!
Q: I LOVE traditional scrapbooking. Will Studio J take away from that?
A: Absolutely NOT! There is room for both in your life. I am living proof. I love them both for totally different reasons. I love the artistic feel of hands on paper and embellishments. I love the speed and ease and professional look of Studio J. Plus, you can always order Studio layouts and then add a few 'lumpy bumpy embellishments' of your own once they come if you have a serious need to do the tactile thing.
Q: I am not a traditional kind of scrapbooker. I have been scrapbooking digitally for years. Is Studio J something that I will like?
A: No doubt about it! I have looked at and tried several different digital offerings out there, and in my opinion, NOTHING can compete with Studio J in quality, concept, cost or beauty!
Q: So seriously, how much does it cost?
A: There is NO COST to use the program. You have no software or hardware to purchase or download. Unless you make a layout (defined as a two page 12 x 12 layout) and decide to purchase it, there is absolutely no cost. Once you decide to purchase, each 2 page layout is introductory priced at $12.95. That is WAY below the industry average! And, if you purchase 5-9 two-page layouts at a time, CTMH will throw in 5 free page protectors. 10 or more and you get FREE SHIPPING, as well as a package of 5 page protectors for every 5 layouts in the order. Cool beans! Once ordered, Close To My Heart prints your layouts on high quality photo paper (I wish you could see the quality of my photographed layouts above in person) and sends them to you. Mine arrived within days of when I ordered them, packaged beautifully and safely.
Q: What if I make a layout and want to save it and purchase it with a group of layouts at a later date?
A: No worries! That is actually the smart way to do it anyway. CTMH will save your projects for 90 days. And, every time you make a purchase your 90 days start over. So, say you make several layouts and then purchase them on day 80. Your 9o day clock starts over. They are saved again. Totally awesome! On top of all of that, CTMH even emails you periodically to remind you where your project clock is.
Q: In a nutshell, how does this "Studio J" thing work?
A: Here are the steps to creating an amazing 2 page layout:
• upload some of your favorite photos
• choose from one of the 54 awesome kits (including most of your favorites from our Idea Books plus some that are exclusive to Studio J)
• choose a layout pattern. There are MANY to choose from. They are like the patterns you'll find in our wonderful "how to" books like Cherish, Imagine, Reflections. The possibilities are endless because all the patterns you can choose from can be rotated 3 ways and flip flopped.
• now personalize! You get to drop your photos in, add text, choose cardstock and background and texture papers from the kit, add accessories (just about every accessory item you can imagine!), distressing, titling, MyStickease, and so much more.
• save and/or buy your layout(s).
Q: If I'm not the techiest of techies, or even techie at all, will I be able to do this?
A: YES! This program is great for techies and non-techies alike. The program is VERY intuitive. And if you need help, there is a user guide you can refer to quickly and easy!!I am SOOOOOOOOOO EXCITED about this program. I know you are going to love it. So, get ready and go play on your lunch break, tonight, or this weekend in honor of National Scrapbooking Month. You won't want to miss it! If you have any questions, I am MORE than happy to answer them. Email me at haleyd@myctmh.com!

If you've read this far, let me share with you a cool thing about my cruise layout. I ordered three copies: one for me, one for my Mom, and one for my sister. One layout times three. Can you get any faster, simpler, easier than that?

The Miracle Kit is Miraculous!

Here are my final projects from my Miracle kit scraps. Of course I had to add extra card stock from my stash. All of the embellishments were included in the kit. I did add my favorite Fringed Phrases stamp set. It is so incredibly versatile with all the "fringes" (brackets, flowers, stars, and more) to frame the sentiments (Just Because, Celebrate, Don't Forget, I'm Sorry, I Love You, and many more).

On the first card, the little chipboard piece was the center of one of the frames that came with the Miracle kit. For the second card (that hopefully looks like a cake!), I wish I had thought to round the top left and right corners on each stack. I used one of the bow frames from my stamp set to make the cake topper. The center strip on the third card is the same B&T Duos, just showing the back of it.

If I had found these last two little pieces of paper on my table before I cleaned up, I'm sure they would have made their way onto a project! This is absolutely all that I have left of this awesome kit. (See my posts on 4/10, 4/13, and 4/17 for all my "miraculous" creations!)

Get 'Em Before They're Gone

As April draws to a close, not only will the adorable April stamp of the month,
Flower Pot, no longer be available, but neither will the fabulous Spring 2010 "Workshops on the Go" Kits.

What's a Workshop on the Go kit? Well, they are a fabulous BARGAIN that Close To My Heart offers with each new Idea Book, while that Idea Book is "live." (Once the next Idea Book comes out, these kits are no longer available. You can still get the paper pack and the embellishments, but you won't be able to get the cool exclusive stamp set nor the instruction guide.)

You can make scrapbook layouts and cards if you follow the instruction guide, or you can be super creative and do your own thing. At only $29.95, you'll love the "bang" you get for you bucks!

Above I was showing off the Caboodle kit, and here are the others:

You Rock

That means that you only have until 4/30 to take advantage of these fabulous kits. Stay tuned to see the new ones available 5/1...

Happy Birthday, My Little Funky Monkey!

Can you believe that my baby is NINE today? Where has the time gone?!? She had a friend from school come home with her last night and spend the night (lots of giggles there), and today we're celebrating with a little family cookout (hopefully in between rain showers and thunderstorms).

(Here are some close ups of the layout of the photos from the day she was born. Not the best quality, I know, but the best I can do right now from the pre-digital era!)

Another Card Kit: Happy Everything

Here's another darling CTMH card kit, called Happy Everything. The only thing I needed to put these cards together (that didn't come with the kit) were my scissors! A few of the My Stickease were longer than I needed, so I just snipped off the excess. Other than that, e-v-e-r-y-t-h-i-n-g was included. How adorable (and faster, simpler, easier) is that?

If you'd like to see all of the My Originals card kits currently available, click right HERE!

No Dentist Left Behind

Today begins our school system's week of state testing. Both of the girls are nervous, and the five days of testing are very stressful. (Third graders must pass reading for promotion, and my fifth graders must pass reading and math to go to 6th grade.) You educators and non-educators alike might like this analogy about merit pay (which my state is now proposing) and the No Child Left Behind law that has required much of the testing schools across the country are now doing.

{Sorry Blogger won't format this better!}

No Dentist Left Behind

My dentist is great! He sends me reminders so I don't forget check-ups. He uses the latest techniques based on research. He never hurts me, and I've got all my teeth. When I ran into him the other day, I was eager to see if he'd heard about the new state program. I knew he'd think it was great. "Did you hear about the new state program to measure the effectiveness of dentists with their young patients?" I said.
"No," he said. He didn't seem too thrilled. "How will they do that?"
"It's quite simple," I said. "They will just count the number of cavities each patient has at age 10, 14, and 18, and average that to determine a dentist's rating. Dentists will be rated as excellent, good, average, below average, and unsatisfactory. That way parents will know which are the best dentists. The plan will also encourage the less effective dentists to get better," I said. "Poor dentists who don't improve could lose their licenses to practice."
"That's terrible," he said.
"What? That's not a good attitude," I said. "Don't you think we should try to improve children's dental health in our state?"
"Sure I do," he said, "but that's not a fair way to determine who is practicing good dentistry."
"Why not?" I asked. "It makes perfect sense to me."
"Well, it's so obvious," he said. "Don't you see that dentists don't all work with the same clientele, and that much depends on things we can't control? For example, I work in a rural area with a high percentage of patients from deprived homes, while some of my colleagues work in upper middle-class neighborhoods. Many of the parents I work with don't bring their children to see me until there is some kind of problem, and I don't get to do much preventive work. Also, more educated parents understand the relationship between sugar and decay. To top it all off, so many of my clients have well water, which is untreated and has no fluoride in it. Do you have any idea how much difference early use of fluoride can make?"
"It sounds like you're making excuses," I said. "I can't believe that you, my dentist, would be so defensive. After all, you do a great job, and you needn't fear a little accountability."
"I am not being defensive!" he said. "My best patients are as good as anyone's, my work is as good as anyone's, but my average cavity count is going to be higher than a lot of other dentists because I chose to work where I am needed most."
"Don't get touchy," I said.
"Touchy?" he asked. His face had turned red, and from the way he was clenching and unclenching his jaws, I was afraid he was going to damage his teeth. "Try furious! In a system like this, I will end up being rated average, below average, or worse. The few educated patients I have who see these ratings may believe this so-called rating is an actual measure of my ability and proficiency as a dentist. They may leave me, and I'll be left with only the most needy patients. And my cavity average score will get even worse. On top of that, how will I attract good dental hygienists and other excellent dentists to my practice if it is labeled below average?"
"I think you are overreacting," I said. "'Complaining, excuse-making and stonewalling won't improve dental health.' I am quoting from a leading member of the DOC," I noted.
"What's the DOC?" he asked.
"It's the Dental Oversight Committee," I said, "a group made up of mostly lay persons to make sure dentistry in this state gets improved.
"Spare me," he said. "I can't believe this. Reasonable people won't buy it," he said hopefully. The program sounded reasonable to me, so I asked, "How else would you measure good dentistry?"
"Come watch me work," he said. "Observe my processes."
"That's too complicated, expensive and time-consuming," I said. "Cavities are the bottom line, and you can't argue with the bottom line. It's an absolute measure."
"That's what I'm afraid my parents and prospective patients will think. This can't be happening," he said despairingly.
"Now, now," I said, "don't despair. The state will help you some."
"How?" he asked.
"If you receive a poor rating, they'll send a dentist who is rated excellent to help straighten you out," I said brightly.
"You mean," he said, "they'll send a dentist with a wealthy clientele to show me how to work on severe juvenile dental problems with which I have probably had much more experience? BIG HELP!"
"There you go again," I said. "You aren't acting professionally at all."
"You don't get it," he said. "Doing this would be like grading schools and teachers on an average score made on a test of children's progress with no regard to influences outside the school, the home, the community served, and stuff like that. Why would they do something so unfair to dentists? No one would ever think of doing that to schools." I just shook my head sadly, but he had brightened. "I'm going to write my representatives and senators," he said. "I'll use the school analogy. Surely they will see the point." He walked off with that look of hope mixed with fear and suppressed anger that I, a teacher, see in the mirror so often lately.

If you don't understand why educators resent the recent federal NO CHILD LEFT BEHIND ACT, [and pay for performance], this may help. If you do understand, you'll enjoy this analogy, which was forwarded by John S. Taylor, Superintendent of Schools for the Lancaster County, PA, School District.

Adorable Storage Containers

Aren't these storage containers adorable? They are "up-cycled" from coffee cans, Pringles cans, and more. Go check out Michelle's post, complete with instructions, and get yourself organized (adorably) today! What a fun weekend project.

Instead of doing this today, however, I'll be teaching my "You Rock" scrapbook class this afternoon after church.

Miracle Kit: 3rd Layout

In our neck of the woods, our weeping cherry still has some lovely blooms, our tulip magnolia is in its full glory, and our dogwoods are beginning to blossom. Spring is my favorite season, though as of today, the pollen may be winning. We had the windows open last night, and I am stopped up this morning.

The Miracle kit is perfect for spring (as I have used it), but don't limit yourself. I can't wait to see what you come up with when you get yours. Using the scraps from my Miracle kit (after creating the two layouts provided in the instruction guide) and some more coordinating scraps from my stash, I finished our Spring Break '08 trip layouts.

Putting this layout together was simple. I grabbed my Cherish how-to guide, found a few sketches for five photos (the number I had left that I wanted to scrap), and then chose the "Kept in Proportion" pattern. All I had to do was follow the directions to cut my paper to the necessary sizes. I didn't follow the guide exactly, but that is the great thing: they are guides! You can recreate your layouts exactly as presented, or you can customize them a bit to suit your taste (or needs). For example, the piece at the far right is "supposed" to measure 4"x12". My scrap of the striped paper only measured 3"x12" so I just centered it on the 4"x12" area of the base card stock.

In keeping with my other layouts, I also sponged the Irresistibles chipboard elements with Blush ink, though I could have chosen several other colors to coordinate with my pictures.

Can you tell that the Sweet Leaf piece inside the Blush frame is the back side of that beautiful flowery B&T?

All of the embellishments I used on this layout came from the Miracle kit.
Believe it or not, I still had a few scraps left, so I'll post my final creations soon.
Let me know if you'd like to get your own Miracle kit (available until 5/31 or while supplies last, so don't delay)!

Amazing April Longaberger Specials

Check out the cute items available beginning 4/15 by clicking right HERE to open a PDF flyer! Thanks for looking.

Spring My Reflections Paper Packs Blog Hop

Close To My Heart offers the most amazing paper pack collections in the form of the My Reflections Paper Packs. All the paper measures 12"x12", and each paper pack includes two sheets each of six different patterned papers (B&T Duos), two each of two different colored card stock, and four sheets of neutral card stock. Did you know that our B&T Duos have a monochromatic back side? They have the same pattern on the back in varying degrees of one of the colors in the pack.

OK, enough talking! If you've come from Sweet Aline's awesome blog, you're hopping right along. If you're starting here, join in on the fun and check out the different paper packs featured in the Spring 2010 CTMH Idea Book. (Here's a link to the next blog if you don't want to read on!)

My projects today all use the Caboodle paper pack. Its colors are Sorbet, Crystal Blue, Sweet Leaf, and Buttercup with Colonial White to hold it all together. My first photos are my unit's Stamp of the Month swap: April's Flower Pot set.

Top photo (clockwise from top left): Cards created by consultants Carla Ramirez, Tanya Stone, Camy Eisentrager, and Pam Beery
Next photo (clockwise from top left): Cards created by consultants Bridget Mahler, Taralyn, {me}, and unfortunately the last card isn't signed.

My second project commemorates the birth of my nephew. I can't believe that he'll be 2 in about a month & a half! What do you think of the addition of Chocolate to the Caboodle pack? I did that on my card too, only this time I also added some B&T from the Twitterpated My Reflections paper pack.
My layout patterns came from the Reflections how-to guide layout. The left page is the "Title Topper- Pieced Together" sketch, and the right page sketch is called "Quartet- Offset."

To be able to add more photos to my page, I used our ingenious flip-flaps! They can stick right to your page protector and will protect your precious photos.

There are too many supplies used on these projects to list here, so let me know if you have any questions about any specific items. Thanks!

Now hop on over to Jena's blog to check out her fabulous artwork! Thanks for stopping by. Which paper pack is your favorite? Veranda, Veranda Creative Basics, Caboodle, Topstitch, or You Rock?

Jeanette's Giveaway

Do you dare? CLICK HERE to enter a great giveaway from Jeanette Lynton, CTMH Founder and CEO! You'll have to leave a tell-all comment, though, so go only if you dare.

Happy Birthday (Times Two)!

Happy birthday today to Joy and Eli!
The card at left is obviously for our dear friend Joy. Can you guess what her favorite color is? (This card is sneak peek at the May stamp of the month, Cherish the Moment.) Have a wonderful day today!!! We love you!

My friend Traci's son Eli is 15 today. He would really be celebrating if he hadn't had a four-wheeler accident last week. Fortunately he wasn't hurt any worse, but he is suffering from a broken tibia (completely with surgery last week to put in plates and pins). Talk about a crummy spring break for them! :( Please pray for a speedy recovery for him and for his mom as she cares for him. Eli, have a great day anyway!

Supplies for the card (all from Close To My Heart): Cherish the Moment stamp set; Topstitch paper pack; Chocolate ink; Spring buttons; Spring brads; Just Blooms Spring Blossoms paper flowers; Colonial White waxy flax; "Simple Expression" pattern from Wishes

Miracle Kit: Layout #2

In just a few more days, the beautiful Miracle kit from Close To My Heart will be available for purchase! Here is the 2nd layout featured in the guide that comes with the kit.

I'm continuing my Spring Break '08 trip theme with these layouts, also of Callaway Gardens. Everything you see here comes with the Miracle kit, except for the Blush ink. (Of course I also used my basic tool kit: trimmer, scissors, and adhesive.)

Quote of the Week

“A positive attitude may not solve all your problems, but it will annoy enough people to make it worth the effort.”

~Herm Albright

This just may be my new motto! Dad, what do you think? (I may not feel chipper at 5:45 when my alarm goes off this morning, but spring break sure has helped rejuvinate me!) Did you know that my dear friend and co-teacher Traci calls me "Pollyhaleyanna?" Her nickname is Eeyore, BTW.

Mini-Medley Accents {Tip}

Our Mini-Medley Accents are the perfect embellishment collection for so many projects! The Colonial White set comes with the Miracle kit, but they can also be purchased separately. Here's a quick tip:

Cut the flap between the segments so that you can open only one segment at a time. (See where my scissors are in the picture to help guide you?)
Yesterday we went to my friend Star's wedding. I can't wait to share photos with you soon! Today is my MIL's birthday too. It also marks the end to our spring break. It's been a good one!

Miracle Kit Layout #1/Irresistibles {Tip}

This layout was so easy to make, and I love how it turned out! I followed the directions in the Miracle kit to create the "Celebrate" layout to celebrate our trip to Callaway Gardens in 2008.

Here are a few hints:

Create the left page first, working from the bottom up. I found it was easier to glue on the die cut at the bottom and then build from there. Next, I lined up the pieces to my left page once the right page was glued down. That way, I didn't have to measure and my pages line up beautifully. Since I did not have an 8"x8" photo to fill that large photo square, I cut four photos down to 4"x4" each.

(Sorry I forgot to take close ups of the 2nd page!) The pictures of the girls are in the cool Flip-Flaps that come with the kit. The brochure even explains how to use them. I slipped my pictures into the flaps, and then placed them over my layout (without adhering them yet). That way I could see where to stick the bottom set of pictures, directly on my layout (so that they wouldn't show around the edges of the flip-flaps).

Finally, this kit includes the most adorable chipboard Irresistibles! What are irresistibles? CTMH has a new line of alphabet stickers and chipboard shapes that have preprinted clear designs (polka dots on the alphabet, for example). It's like they've been clear embossed before coming to you. Then you can sponge color onto the Irresistibles and the white base shows through. How cute is that?

Tip: Swipe the Irresistibles with the sponge instead of pouncing. I found that I could add color more quickly and more richly by swiping or burnishing it on. (Burnishing is basically rubbing the sponge around in a circular motion.)
